Our Commitment to Sustainability

At FIDIC we believe in taking responsibility for our environmental impact and we are committed to one of our main core principles; sustainability. As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to a greener future, we have undertaken the initiative to measure our own carbon emissions. We are excited to share with you the details of this important endeavour.

Actions for FIDIC

The science around climate change and the subsequent setting of targets to help and reduce the negative consequences of the actions of humanity continues to evolve. As the global federation of consulting engineers, FIDIC sees it as important to take a leadership position on climate action and carbon emission reduction. There are three primary elements of the challenge which FIDIC will seek to address:

  • Influence and advocacy.
  • Building, infrastructure and industrial
    facilities delivery.
  • FIDIC’s operations.

We will address these both regarding FIDIC’s own operations, facilities and activities but also through the internationally recognised business, technical and contractual guidance that FIDIC provides to the engineering profession and infrastructure development and financing institutions.

Measuring our carbon footprint

Understanding our carbon footprint is crucial in identifying areas where we can reduce our environmental impact. We have partnered with Positive Planet, our reputable environmental consultants to conduct a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment of our operations. This assessment includes measuring our direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that result from our activities, including operations, facilities and energy usage.

We are using science-based globally recognised standards in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, to ensure the accuracy and credibility of our carbon footprint assessment. This allows us to establish a baseline for our emissions and set targets for reducing our carbon footprint in the future, working towards a net zero / 1.5°C of warming trajectory for Scopes 1 and 2 and covering Scope 3 as relating specifically to business travel and commuting emissions.

Why measuring our carbon footprint matters

As a responsible organisation, we recognise the urgent need to address climate change and reduce GHG emissions. By measuring our own carbon footprint, we are taking an important step towards understanding our impact on the environment and identifying areas for improvement. Here are some key reasons why measuring our carbon footprint matters to us:

Accountability: Measuring our carbon footprint allows us to take accountability for our own emissions and understand our contribution to climate change. It helps us assess our progress towards our sustainability goals and track our performance over time.

Transparency: We are committed to being transparent with our stakeholders, including our members, employeesand partners. By sharing the results of our carbon footprint assessment, we are providing open and honest information about our environmental impact and our efforts to mitigate it.

Actionable Insights: By measuring our carbon footprint, we can identify specific areas where we can reduce emissions, optimize our operationsand implement sustainable practices. This data-driven approach helps us make informed decisions and prioritise our sustainability initiatives for maximum impact.

Our Next Steps

Based on the findings of our carbon footprint assessment, we are developing a comprehensive sustainability plan that includes specific actions to reduce our emissions. These actions may include investing in renewable energy, optimising our transportation and logistics, implementing energy-efficient technologies and engaging our employees and partners in sustainability initiatives.

We are also committed to regularly monitoring and reporting on our progress towards our sustainability goals. This includes updating our carbon footprint assessment periodically to ensure that we are accurately measuring our emissions and making meaningful progress towards our targets.

Join us in our sustainability journey!

Reducing our carbon footprint is a collective effort and we invite our members, employees, partners and stakeholders to join us in our sustainability journey. Together, we can make a positive impact on the environment and create a more sustainable future for generations to come.

At FIDIC, our initiative to measure our own carbon footprint is a significant step towards our commitment to sustainability. By taking responsibility for our environmental impact and implementing meaningful actions to reduce our emissions, we are striving to be a responsible organisation and contribute towards a greener future. We will continue to update our stakeholders on our progress and look forward to working together towards a more sustainable world.
